The La Union Surfing Break was conceptualized and launched in 2006 to educate and expose surfing to the general public through proper teaching methods. Timed during semestral break, the target market of the event was students from Manila, Baguio and other Northern Luzon cities. Among the three other well-known surf sites in the Philippines- Siargao in Surigao del Norte, Baler in Aurora and Daet in Camarines Sur-- La Union is the most accessible for those coming from Mega Manila. The event turned the beach cove of Urbiztondo, San Juan La Union into the likes of one hot summer gateway in Boracay.

Learn to surf in San Juan La Union Philippines

There are alot of locals in San Juan La Union ready to assist you if you want to learn how to surf. Some surfing instructors charge about Php 400 and up for one hour of hands on tutorial and rent of the surfboard. Most of surf tutors wont allow beginners to rent their surfboard. This is due to risks involved such as breaking the surfboard. If you are a beginner and planning to surf at San Juan, its a good practice to read some tips and advices before you ride the waves. Here are some compiled tips, techniques and articles gathered around the net.

  • Choose the right surfboard to use. You'll be frustrated if you don't use the proper surfboard. Beginner's usually use big boards that are wide and thick. Professional or pro surfers use smaller boards but trust me, they too started with wide and thick boards before they use smaller ones.
  • Practice pop up and stance. Lie your board flat and think you are on the water. Paddle out, pop up and adjust stance. Knees are slightly bent and far apart. Make it sure its the distance is at your comfort zone (not too far, not too near). Check if your feet are on the center line for balance. Tip: You may draw a line at the center of your surfboard to check your feet alignment. There is nothing wrong with it if you are a newbie. :)
  • Look before dropping on a wave. This is similar to "stop look and listen" preschool rhyme. Most of the time you are not the only one surfing. Give respect on whoever has the right of way. They are usually the ones deeper or closer to the curl than you. This may prevent everybody from injuries.
  • Learn to share waves. Don't be selfish. Wait for your turn in riding a wave. Don't rush yourself back if you see a good wave coming even if you are not on the right position. Again, this would prevent injuries.
  • Stay away from the reef area/break. A part of surfing area in San Juan Philippines is near a reef. You should stay away from the side/area where there is a reef break. It posts a great danger as they are pointed and sharp. Some locals would call your attention if you are very near the reefs.
  • Use surfboard nose guards. Im sure you dont want to be hit by a sharp leading and trailing edges. This would cause lacerations but without them surfboard would loose speed and drive. Use surfboard nose guards to protect yourself and others from getting hurt. Placing surfing nose guards takes only a minute to do so. Surf safe.
  • And lastly score a date with a surfer girl. Nice! How? Well its up to you guys... Cheers!
